One Book Whonnock 2013/2014

It was just before the First World War that George and Dorothy Godwin made a failed attempt to settle in Whonnock. George, a scholarly man, later joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces and fought in France. He was reunited with his wife in England and their children after the war.

His book The Eternal Forest was first published around 1929. This is the book selected by One Book Whonnock as their next choice for neighbours to read this year.

The novel offers fascinating aspects of life in the backwoods and elsewhere in the Lower Mainland in the pre-war years as seen by a young British immigrant “the Newcomer.” The Eternal Forest focuses in particular on the life of the Newcomer and his wife in Ferguson’s Landing (Whonnock), with nature all around them, and among those “little folks…with little minds and little ideas” who were their neighbours and on whom they looked down.

Call Jean at 604 462 8942 or send an e-mail to webmaster@whonnock.ca if you are interested to join in the reading or want to know more. Click here to read, download, or print the flyer. And click here to go to the One Book Whonnock Web site.

Easter Egg Hunt 2013

Shelley and her team of volunteers made more than 300 kids and their companions very happy. The event was extremely well planned to the smallest detail and wonderfully executed. Never did the Whonnock Community Association welcome so many people at the yearly event. Sunshine and 20 degrees made it probably one of the warmest events in more than 30 years. Thornhill Square Dance

Betty as the witch of the west
The square-dance at Thornhill Hall on Saturday was a roaring success--between 55 and 60 people attending! Three lessons learned: (1) You are allowed to make errors; (2) You are allowed to laugh;  (3) Don't trust the caller!! There were many mistakes made and even more laughter. The caller did a marvellous job straightening out a confused but happy lot. Click here to see some pictures of the party.

One Book Whonnock

On February 28th, twenty-seven people waded through the rains to meet their neighbours at Whonnock Lake Centre and talk about this year's "One Book Whonnock" book – a murder mystery in the sunny Riviera, The Corpse with the Silver Tongue.  It was a lively evening with the presence of the author, Cathy Ace herself a neighbourhood resident. On the photo Jean Davidson, the heart and soul of One Book Whonnock (left) and Cathy Ace with some of the participants in the background discussing the book. Click on photo to enlarge.

Easter Egg Hunt at Whonnock Lake

The Whonnock Community Association presented its first Easter Egg Hunt at Whonnock Lake in 1981, more than 30 years ago.
Come, greet the bunny, go on a chase for chips, and be rewarded with a big handful of delicious chocolate easter eggs! There are also special prizes for each age group. And it is free, of course, as always.
Be there on Sunday 31 March at 1:00 pm sharp. We've ordered sunshine!
Click here to look at the pictures of last year's hunt.

The Easter Bunny is looking for volunteers! If you are ready and willing to hop along please call Shelley at 604-462-1881.

Volunteer Dinner postponed

The yearly dinner presented by the Whonnock Community Associations every spring to honour volunteers and volunteer groups in our community will be postponed until the fall. This because of the work on the transfer of the management of Whonnock Lake Centre to the District of Maple Ridge.
